Typhoon Bordeaux Granite 3CM

Hi - Just got our new granite and used a large cut out piece to run your absorption test, I made puddles of lemon juice, red wine, olive oil and water for over three hours with no hint of absorption, stain, darkening from any of those fluids. Did I just get lucky with this granite? I feel uneasy about using the STONETECH heavy duty sealer and polish spray I was given and advised to use but I don't want to be sorry later if I should have. Thanks so much, great site. Pam

Dear Pam:

I really don't know what kind of stone Typhoon Bordeaux actually is. It is my understanding that's classified as “exotic granite” (whatever that means), and consequently, it is probably heavily resined by the factory, which makes for a permanent seal.

However, what I may or may know specifically about that particular stone is pretty much immaterial: the only real thing that counts is the testing that you conducted. And that testing proves, beyond any possible doubt, that your slab does not absorb a darn thing. Which begs the question: how could you possibly apply an impregnator (a.k.a. sealer and that is what the product you mentioned is) to that stone if it will not absorbed by it?! Not only would it be totally useless, but, most importantly, it would be impossible.

Take the unopened bottles of those products back to get a full refund and suggest your dealer that, perhaps, it would hurt much if they'd tried to learn a thing or two – at least the very basics – about the stones they sell.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. (Like using a cleaner that contains wax, for instance! It does have lots of marketing appeal, but if you think for a minute it makes no sense.) Don't become another statistic!
