limestone /honed black absolute maintenance guidelines

We are buying a home where the builder has already installed honed black absolute kitchen countertops and limestone tiles in the masterbath. The house was already been finished when we toured it so we have no control over the fabrication or selection of these materials. We are purchasing the house for reasons other than what materials the builder selected for surfaces. That being said, how can we make the best of these two difficult surfaces? what cleaning products of yours do you recommend? I do not think they sealed the granite, it looks great and is smooth and clean. I don't know about the limestone but if it hasn't been sealed, should we seal it?

Dear Kerry:

If they didn't seal the “granite” I would immediately treat it with a good quality stone color enhancer like MB-6 and then take it from there with a product like MB-5 for routine care. You should be fine.

As far as the limestone tiles that you have in your bathroom are concerned, by saying limestone you're saying very little – if anything at all. There are many different (and I do mean different) kinds of limestone that span from dense and acceptable rocks, to limestone that will actually fall apart under running water or “powder” or “bleach” (all problems with no solution), and everything in between.

So which limestone do you have?

Generally speaking limestone could benefit from a sealing job, but, as usual, the selection first, the installation second and, finally, the routine care are vastly more important than the sealing.
