terrazzo versus slate flooring

Dear Maurizio, I am building a large billiard room. I installed a cement floor(with Wirsbro type in-floor heat). I'm installing an antique 16' Brunswick bar and I'm at the point to buying flooring for the room (2,000 square feet). I have heard terrazzo requires some maintenance, this is a billiards room for guys smoking cigars, dogs to sleep on occasionally, the occasional mishot pool ball that hits the floor, and maybe an infrequent soft drink or beer spill. I have been checking sites that sell filled travertine (travertineexport.net) and other sites that sell slate. Marble and granite appear too expensive. I will hire a professional to install the flooring, which type of flooring should I choose? Thanks in advance for your help, Steven Pine Point Drive Walker, MN

Dear Steven:

If you like the look of slate, get porcelain tiles slate look-alike. It takes a trained eye to tell them apart from the real thing, and they're virtually bullet-proof.

The real thing? I don't think so! Terrazzo does require less maintenance than slate. But then, just about any flooring requires less maintenance than slate, if you're particular about your floor as you sound to be.

And if decide to go with stone, don't buy it online. I know I wouldn't.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
