volga blue

I had Volga Blue Granite installed 10 days ago. the installer put a sealer on it. I called their office and told them that I had read that Volga Blue should not be sealed and they told me that I was wrong. I do not want them back in my house. Is there something that I can do to get rid of the sealer? If I do not put any thing else on it will the stone be o.k? any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Brenda

Dear Brenda:

The reason why a stone like Volga Blue should not be sealed is because it can't be technically sealed. The stone is too dense to take any impregnator (a.k.a. sealer) in. (BTW, Volga Blue is one of my favorite “granites”!) Therefore applying an impregnating sealer to a stone like that only serves the noble purpose of helping the manufacturer of the product to put his kids through college.

Is there something that I can do to get rid of the sealer?

Hopefully you shouldn't worry about that. In fact, the most important phase of the application of an impregnator is to make sure that every bit of the residue of the product is removed from the surface of the stone before it has a chance to dry, so that, at the end of the job, the surface of the stone is as bare as it was before the application of the sealer. If they did the application right, you should have no sealer left on the surface of the stone. None of it is in, either: it all went into the garbage bin…

If you will experience weird “ghost” stains (of a lighter color than the stone and that you can only see from certain angles) let me know and I'll tell you what to do to get rid of the possible residue of the sealer. If not… enjoy!

But remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is far more important than its sealing (if and when possible) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
