Honed noir travertine as backsplash.

Hello, I just installed "verde candais" granite( looks like verde sao fransciso under another name) I was looking for backspalsh and tile store guy suggested hone noir travertine 4x4 with a pencil edge and a few accents of 4x4 stainless tiles which look like old tine ceiling tile. My house is victorian and the kitchen traditinoal with cherry cabinets. the combinations appeals to me because of its timeless and traditional look. I would sealthe travertine with an enhancer to shine it up a bit. Comments please. Good idea? HArd to maintain? Too dark? (I hve ceiling, recessed and undercabinet lighting). Thanks so much!! pjs

Dear Pamela:

The buzz in town is that I know a couple of things about natural stone (but you don't have to listen to every rumor you hear!... J ). What you must listen to, however, is if someone tells you that I make a lousy decorator! I'm even 25% colorblind, for crying out loud!! L

That said, the only comment I can make is that a color-enhancer will not give you any shine: like any other below-surface product it will only give you an increased depth of color and sealing performance, if the product is also an impregnator (a.k.a. sealer), like most – including MB-6 - are.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – like it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
