fire damage

i have wood and slate cofee tables purchased form roomfull express we had a fire the the tables recieved smoke damage i was able to strip the wood but was wondering how to clean the slate on them

Dear Robin:

By saying slate you're saying very little – if anything at all. There are many different (and I do mean different) kinds of slate that span from dense and acceptable rocks, to slate that will actually fall apart under running water or turn into mud, and everything in between.

So which slate do you have?

What I really mean by that is certain slates could be cleaned with some specific cleaning chemicals formulated to remove fire damage without any consequence, while other slates would be severely damaged by them.

If I were you I would try the “mild” approach by using a powerful cleaning product containing a percentage of Sodium Hypochlorite and rated for natural stone, like MB-9.

You're going to have to let the product sit on the surface of the stone for a long time, feeding it with some more if it dries, but it should work.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
