Ghost Ring stains on granite

Hello. I have been reading your site and find it very informative. I have a couple of rings on my 4 week old granite counter top ... very frustrating! Funny thing is, they are very noticable when you wipe the counter with granite cleaner or even water and soap but as it drys the rings become very faint (one becomes almost invisible). When the counter is dry they are lighter in colour. I have "Antique Brown" granite which is chocolate brown in colour and has big flakes in it. I have never sealed it and the installer didn't either. What could this be and how can I get rid of the stains? Thanks for your help!

Dear Ken:

Are all those rings of the same size? How big are they? Would the fit the size of a suction cup?

If that's the case, then the problem could be easily fixed by re-polishing the affected areas with a good-quality granite polishing powder, providing that you fabricator knows how to face polish stone.

At any rate, it's their problem and the only effective solution is the one that I just explained to you.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic! By logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/helpful-hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge.
