Granite Countertop

the counter top is terrific and has meet all of our expectations both in beauty and fuctionality. I have just a minor issue and it has to do with the "working side" of the left sink. the Sinks are underslung so no problem there. it's really with the edge of the granite on the left sink edge. this is the edge that gets all the work due to the diswasher being left sided and it also happens to be the perferred sink to use. The edge is developing very minor chips not visably noticable but noticeable by rubbing a finger along the edge. I'd like to "clean" this edge up and try to make the wife more careful with pots or pans that seem to be causing this. Can i "wet sand" or stone polish this edge without worry of dulling the finished edge. Maybe not dulling so much as just killing the polished edge, which i don't want to do. Keep in mind now, i'm not talking about the entire 1" edge, it is just the upper corner of the edge and these are just minor 1/16" or smaller chips. Thanks so much for any help.....

Dear Led:

Sorry, but I never encourage DIYers to work with stone, unless it is something easy like removing a stain or an etch-mark. I did it a couple of times in the past and in both oc cas ions my “trainees” messed up big time! L

Your only option is to have your fabricator take care of it, or to get hold of a good stone restoration professional.

Although you're not specifically saying it, I must assume that you have a sharp edge of sorts. If that's the cas e, you have to realize that the chipping will happen over and over again.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic! By logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/helpful-hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge.
