black granite countertops

why can't a BLACK granite countertop be granite? i don't get it........i read what u wrote about black granite but i'm still unsure as to the exact answer to my question

Well, you're asking the wrong guy. I'm only the reporter. It is not my fault if Mother Nature decided to make granite different from black “granite”, is it?... J

Black “granite” is either gabbro, diorite, norite or anorthosite. None of those stones have anything to do with granite: their mineralogy is completely different, and your question sounds like, “why can't jade ring (or ruby or emerald) be diamond? I don't get it…” J

But that does not mean that black “granite” (whatever stone it is) is not as good as granite for the intents and purposes of a kitchen countertop. As a matter of fact, if it not maliciously doctored or if it is not a “mutt” stone that's sensitive to acidic substances, most black “granites” are even better than true granite. In fact they are naturally virtually stain-proof. They are just totally different stones from a petrographic point of view.
