matte black countertop

What stone would you recommend for a matte black/dark grey look in the kitchen of a 1880's era house? I see that you've recommended soapstone. Why would soapstone be preferable to honed black granite?

Soapstone, hands down!

Soapstone is the closest thing to maintenance free that money can buy. It is not for nothing that they use soapstone in chemistry labs!

Sure, it's easy to scratch; but it's easy to repair, too, with a few strokes of good ol' sandpaper. Other than that, nothing can possible affect it.

Look at how many posts there are right here reporting complaints with hone-finished black "granite". Can you find a single post with gripes about soapstone?

Let me answer that for you: None whatsoever!

And that speaks volumes right there! People don't came here reporting how great their stone is: they come here only when they have problems!

And then, do you really think that they even knew hone-finished black granite back in 1880?... J
