Recommended tile for shower stall

I would prefer natural stone. Marble, granite or something of the kind. What would you recommend for durability and easy maintenance? Also, would marble or granite be slippery?

Dear Joan:

Hone-finished marble would be quite all right. (Certain varieties of polished marble would be fine, too. As for "granite" only a few too absorbent stone would not qualify. (Do not listen to the sealing thing. You do not want to apply a sealer to stone in a wet environment.) The key factor for easy maintenance is not the material, however, but the installation. A faulty installation (and I've seen my large share of those!) will lead to "maintenance" problems with no solution this side of the ripping out of the stall. But that is valid with every material.

The full version of our Maintenance Guidelines for Residential Stone Installations  – a 7-page document considered by many as an industry benchmark – is available in pay- per-download format in our Educational Literature section at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/literature.htm . It contains priceless tips on how to install a stone shower stall!

And remember, every single penny of the cost of the literature will be used to support this site and its cause: your cause.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?   :-)

Ciao and good luck,

Maurizio Bertoli
