Nero Marquina as kitchen flooring

Hi Maurizio, this is a great site! I wanted to get some advice on teh use of Nero Marquina as a floor tile in teh kitchen. We are looking at a honed finish tile produced in Spain (we live in teh UK) which consists of 7mm of natural stone with 3mm of porcelain reinforcement. The shop has told us the following ''The components are fused together using tough, unalterable resin and a fiberglass mesh that maximizes phisical and mechanical properties and gives a weight of 26kg/m2. Due to the high content of organic carbon, this material can not be recommended as flooring, but it makes beautiful wall coverings." Why is nero marquina not recommended for flooring? many thanks and regds, Marco

Dear Marco:

Why is nero marquina not recommended for flooring?

It is not the “high content of organic carbon” in the stone that makes it not suitable as flooring material, but rather its high content of calcite (calcium carbonate).

In lay terms, the stone is highly sensitive to any acidic substance, and therefore you do not want to have a stone like that near a kitchen.

For once that the stone dealer is right!... J
