Black Pearl with scratches

Had Black Pearl "Granite" countertops installed about 1 year ago. Not sure whether they are sealed. I think the installed said they were not and because it is so dense would not need to be. Now have several light scratches. What is the most likely cause. Can kitchen ceramic cookware cause them? Short of having the countertops polished by the installer, can anything else be done to remove the scratches?

Dear Ed:

I think the installed said they were not and because it is so dense would not need to be.

The installer is right: that particular stone can't be technically sealed.

Now have several light scratches. What is the most likely cause. Can kitchen ceramic cookware cause them?

Yes, kitchen ceramic cookware can do that. They actually will do that.

can anything else be done to remove the scratches?

A scratch is a groove that's the consequence of the removal of some of the stone. In other words, a scratch is the result of something missing. Now, how could one possibly remove something missing? It would be like trying to remove a hole from a doughnut… J

The surface all around the scratches must be ground down to the depth of the scratches themselves, and then honed and polished to match.

By far, it is not certainly a DIY project.
