Tuck tape residue on Crema Marfil

Hello Maurizio, I hope you can help me. We've done very stupid thing. While waiting for our glass shower doors to be installed, we taped a shower curtain onto our honed (unsealed) crema marfil shower jam using tuck tape and when we took it down, it left a horrible red residue. I've tried to remove same on a sample piece using a solvent that the hardware store recommended called "Goof Off" and it dissolved the tape residue, but somehow liquified the red dye and spread it all over the sample piece. Can't seem to get the pinkness out of it. Do you have a suggestion to remedy this mess? Gratefully, Elaine in Toronto

Dear Elaine:

I don't think it was a mistake. If I had a dime for every time I used duct-tape on marble during my contracting years…! What is really weird is the red residue that you report it left. All the duct-tape I ever saw has whitish glue, not red; and the tape itself is silvery… So I really don't know what happened and you're certainly not the one to blame. And Goof-Off is an excellent product to remove adhesive residue…

At any rate, now you have an imbedded stains to deal with (after having removed the adhesive residue), which I assume is to be classified as inorganic. It shouldn't be difficult to get rid of it.

When it comes to stain removal, either you buy one of those expensive “Professional kits” (that true professionals seldom use!) at a stone retailer near you, or you can spend less money and get our comprehensive guidelines on how to remove stains by using inexpensive and far more effective means that you may already have in your household! Such impressive piece of literature will also tell you how to tell stains apart from “stains”, and what to do about the latter! It does carry a small price tag, and you can order it by logging on at:   http://www.mbstone.com/literature/literature.htm.   It's available in pay-per-download format and it's much cheaper than any kit on the market! Not to mention the little and much needed support you'd be giving to the cause – your cause - since every single penny of the cost of the article will be used to support it.

Also, will you please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose by logging on at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm? By spreading the word about this valuable site among your friend & family and the stone trades' people you've been dealing with, you will be rendering everybody a valuable service!

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri zio Bertoli
