slate tiles on countertop

We have 12" black slate tiles that were used on a patio, but didn't hold up well there (probably not outdoor grade and improperly installed). We salvaged and I wondered about using them for kitchen counters. Would your products keep in good shape and would you recommend slate tiles for this? I have a good tile man who could initally apply products and install. I don't want extremely high maintenance for this high-use area. I notice you say not to try sealing; will olive oil, wine spills, etc. have a bad effect over time, or is that just part of the "organic" effect the designers talk about--like on concrete counters? Thx, Nancy Burnett

Dear Nancy:

I will keep it short and sweet for you: don't even think about it!

The “organic effect” that you designer is talking about is a fancy (and pathetic, if you ask me) way of saying that your countertop will look like a war zone, but you will still have to love it!

If you're the “I-couldn't-care-less-the-way-my-countertop-looks” type, then it will be fine and dandy. But if you would not be thrilled at the idea that eventually your countertop will look as your tiles look now, then you'd better rethink the “organic effect” thing.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri zio Bertoli
