Absolute Black Granite - Doctored Stone

Q. We just had Absolute Black counter tops installed in our kitchen and within three days we have about 10 to 15 round white rings on it. We paid a lot of money for them and they now look like crap. Is there anyway to get the rings out and is there anyway to prevent more? The counters look good, but we can't use them or they stain.

A. Uh oh... this sounds like what you may be a victim of 'doctored stone' -- grey granite dyed to look like Absolute Black. If this is the case, what happens is the 'stains' you are seeing are actually spots where the dye has come off. Have you contacted your fabricator?

This is one reason why it is so important to be very selective with your fabricator. Although, I will say that there are times when the fabricator is as much a victim as the customer.

Do this test: take a rag with MEK or acetone which you can find at your local hardware or home improvement store. Wipe the stone. If color transfers to the rag, this will confirm that the stone is dyed.

If this is the case, you need to contact your fabricator immediately and inform them. They will need to replace the countertops with the real thing instead of the dyed stone.

Please keep us informed.
