Sandstone fireplace hearth

Q. We have a sandstone fireplace hearth. Before we start to use the new freestanding fireplace on the hearth I was hoping to get your expert advise on what is the best method of sealing it and or the sealer to prevent the soot from penetrating the stone.

A. Hi Colleen-I am not sure sealer will prevent the topical stain that soot or  creosote will create. I think it may make the stone easier to clean because it will fill the pores of the stone to a certain extent. Heavy duty cleaners will degrade the sealer each time you clean it you may need to reseal.
