Mudset or durarock

Maurizio, I have read through many postings but don't see a specific answer to my question(s). My house is 50 years old and the floors are not 100% level. I am having travertine 16" tiles installed in the kitchen and need to know if it is better to do a mudset/heated floor mat/thinset/stone application or a durarock/heated floor/thinset/stone application. There is 1/2 or 3/4" plywood (not sure) on the floor right now. My concern is that the durarock will not allow the 16" stone tiles to lay as level as they would with a mudset base. Please advise. Also, the plywood base is currently level with the adjoining rooms so I'm also looking at an uneven 'ramp' from room to room. One other question. Is it better to mudset a tub/shower stone application or is the durarock ok in that situation? Thanks

Dear Nancy:
The answer to your question is, very definitely, mud!
Cement board is always second best and certainly not good when you have an uneven subfloor.

As for the mudding of the shower stall, it will also be the best way to go, but it require a true knowledgeable craftsman to do that. Durorock is quite acceptable is installed properly.

And don't forget to learn how to take good care of your stones!! :-)

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?   :-)

Ciao and good luck,
