CARRARA MARBLE FLOOR IN BATHROOMS OF OUR HOTEL ROOMS

Dear Maurizio, I'm the chief engineer of a HILTON ATHENS and I face a terrible problem with brown stains that appeared on our marble floor at bathrooms. We send a piece of this tile to an outside laboratory who concluded that the stains exist due to iron deposits in the marble. Do you know any product that we may try in order to remove those stains? Looking forward to your reply.

Dear George:

We send a piece of this tile to an outside laboratory who concluded that the stains exist due to iron deposits in the marble

That is correct.

And, no, there's nothing that you can do to remove those rust stains: the core of the stone is rusted, not just the surface.

Now the question is: why do you have that rusting?

Because the only way to activate the iron mineral deposit within the marble is if you have water under the tiles. So, why and how did water find its way under the tiles? Are they rusted only near the toilet bowl, which will indicate a not-so-good wax seal? Are they rusted a little bit randomly because, perhaps, you have no grout between the tiles that, maybe, were installed butt-joint? (And when customers splash water from the tub it finds its way between the tiles and under them.)

Even if there were a way to remove those rust stains (which, alas, like I said does not exist) you would by working on the consequence of the problem not on its core; and consequently you would not solve it.

First you have to find and solve the real problem and then replace the rusted tiles.

And BTW, even if you install a marble with no iron in it, if you have a source of water going under the tiles, you would always have some sort of dire consequence even if different from rusting. Once again: find and solve the real problem before deciding on anything else.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri z io Bertoli
