travertine with kids and dogs.

i have been reading your comments on the care and maintainence of travertine. i love the look of it and its my first choice for flooring.i just wonder if its a wise choice for a kitchen floor in a home with kids and aging dogs. i dont want to regret my decision.

Dear Donald:

First off, the only travertine you should consider for a project like that is either honed-and-filled, or tumbled-and-filled.

After that, if you don't mind the “changes” that your floor will inevitably go through due to the type of traffic you will have on it, you should be just fine.

The reason why a put the word changes in between quotation marks is because to certain communities they would represent a sought after evolution that will lead to a highly-desirable “lived-in” look; while to other communities such “changes” – each and ever one of them – will be considered damages that need to be rectified.

Which one community you belong to is going to be the determining factor of your choice.
