Honed Granite |
Article Number: 976 | Rating: Unrated | Last Updated: Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 12:00 AM |
I read your post on honed granite and the staining possibilities of the surface. My husband and I are starting a new construction and I was planning on getting honed granite countertops in the kitchen. We have five children at home, and I am wondering if I should forego the idea of the soft looking honed finish, and just get the high polish surface instead. Our building contractor is in charge of getting countertops and I don't know how I would truthfully find out if it had been impregnated/sealed. Is the polished surface a better choice to prevent stains?
Dear Tonja:
If your building contractor is in charge of getting the countertops, I would not consider hone-finished back granite.
That's good and it could be kept under control if the final user (you) were in control of the fabrication/installation process. If you prefer to leave that responsibility to someone who doesn't know the first thing about stone and its requirements, then I would say no.
As a matter of fact, I would say no to polished black granite altogether: there are too many maliciously doctored slabs of “black” “granite” out there, and your GC wouldn't probably be able to tell a doctored slab from whipped cream.
To expand the subject even further, I would stay away from natural stone – period. Either you have a true expert taking care of that part of the business, or you do your own homework.
A GC?
You will not be getting what you pay for, but what he pays for!
