After I finish sanding the etchings out my Jerusalem stone what would be the next step in trying to protect the kitchen countertops from future etchings?

 

Dear Kristin:

You have a few options:

 

1. You could try to sacrifice a goat to the gods of stone;
2. You could dust off that old book of alchemy and try to turn limestone into a silicate rock;
3. You could stop spilling anything acidic on your countertop;
4. You can keep on sanding.

 

Joking aside, there's nothing on this little blue planet that could prevent etching on stones that are sensitive to pH active substances. Just about every chemist in the world has approached this problem for at least the past 150 years.
