I have grantite TILE for my kitchen counter top. A friend told me to use glass cleaner for the top. 3 years later, I read not to use glass cleaner, so now I use a granite cleaner and granite polish that I bought from a home imrpovement store. Prior to using the two granite products(and currently) I see that there is a "film" on the granite tiles. Neother product takes it off. You can smear it with your finger tips. I rarely use the polish as I have read you should only need to use a granite polish once a month. Also, the granite tiles were never sealed. What is the 'film' and how do I get rid of it and keep up these tiles? Thanks!

Let's start by saying that the fact that you never sealed your stone has nothing to do with your problem.

Besides the possible long-term damages that certain so-called glass cleaners could make on certain “granites”, those kinds of cleaners are typically not strong enough to handle the kind of soil typical of a kitchen countertop.

What you have (and which I've seen all too many times) is – pardon me to put it down bluntly – filth!

And your regular stone cleaner, while probably appropriate for every day routine cleaning, is not aggressive enough to tackle it. As simple as that.

Right now you need something more heavy-duty to hit your countertop much harder than you stone cleaner does. The best would be the use of an alkaline heavy-duty cleaner with chelates in its formula rated “for natural stone”, like MB-3 to actually deep clean your countertop. And after that, you will be able to take it from there with your regular stone cleaner.
