Safe Sealer for Absolute Black Granite

Dear Maurizio, My builder recommends that I seal my absolute granite counter tops but I know you have always recommended against that. However, I want to follow the builder's instructions just in case something goes wrong. I do not want to give them any excuse not to honor the warranty. So my thought is to apply a sealer that, although maybe unnecessary and useless, will not cause any problems down the road. Can you recommend any specific product?

Dear Chuck:

I have enough hard time to keep up with learning intelligent things; I really have no expertise (nor do I care to achieve it) in silliness.

So, I can't answer your question. If your priority is to make you GC happy by throwing away time and money instead of making sure that you care for your stone in the proper ways, just go ahead and pretend to seal your stone. And also take pictures of the whole procedure, so that you can proudly show them to the CG and he will be very pleased and sleep soundly at night!

Now your question is, with what sealer? Not my own impregnator, please! I don't want any part in this kind of insanity, thank you very much.

So, go to the Home Depot or something, grab the first bottle of impregnator you find and be happy with it.

And BTW, the implication that they may void their warranty if you don't bend over and “seal” your stone, is not only downright illegal in all 50 states, but is hilarious, as well. Are you gonna tell me that they will not honor their warranty if, say, your countertop crack after a couple of weeks after installation because you did not pretend to seal it?? And how about if that “black granite” will turn out to be maliciously doctored or a “mutt” stone sensitive to acids?...

But as funny as it is, I wasted enough time on this one.

Ciao and good luck,

Maurizio Bertoli
