Without actually inspecting your stone with a magnifying glass (I mean it), I can't tell exactly what the real story is. Considering the type of stone and your description of the problem, I will assume that's an accumulation of mineral deposits.
Hoping that I'm right on the money, first you scrape the worst with a razor-blade and then you finish the job with a heavy-duty alkaline cleaner
with chelates in its formula (to remove soap scum and mineral deposits) rated for natural stone, like MB-3.
