CaesarStone as facing for a fireplace ?

We have a wood fired brick lined fireplace and are considering facing it with caesarstone however were considered that it may discolor with the heat. Please advise.

Dear Amola:

I really don't know much about manmade materials. For the little that I know about engineered stone in general, I wouldn't be as worried about any possible discoloration due to the heat (though not to be excluded – I just don't know), as I would be worried about that 30% or more of epoxy making up the slab. Epoxy is certainly not heat-resistant.

Yeah, I know: the advertising of engineered stone goes that the content of quartz is on around 95% and the reminder 5% is epoxy. While true, such information is highly misleading: that percentage makes reference to ratio by weight – not volume (which is what really counts in real life). Since the specific gravity of the quartz crystals (or whatever else they mix in that stuff) is way greater than the epoxy's, the ratio by volume is approximately 60% to 70% quartz crystals (and/or whatnot) and 30% to 40% epoxy. Talk about “selling it”, huh!... L
