marble shower with soap scum

We have a marble shower stall and the floor is getting extremely dirty where our feet usually stand. What would you recommend to clean it? There is also a lot of soap scum build-up by the drain. I believe it is honed marble. It is not a huge area, what should I expect to pay (ballpark) if I get is professionally cleaned and polished?

Dear Carl:

I must admit that I never heard that one before!…

There is also a lot of soap scum build-up by the drain.

I doubt it. It is probably efflorescence, which would indicate that you have water under your tiles (damaged and/or missing grout lines?), which, to a certain degree, by a stretch of imagination and depending on the stone, may even offer a sensible explanation for the unusual soiling.

My best advice is that you consult with a reputable stone restoration contractor in your area. In that way you will have a sure assessment of the problem and proper course of action.

As for routine care, should it turn out that's indeed soap scum accumulation, b y logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at:  http://www.mbstone.com/HH_promo/helpful_hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge.
