Pre-Sealing travertine before grouting

Hi Maurizio There are conflicting comments on sealing travertine before grouting and having just finished our lobby floor can I ask. I read on the forum someone aked “ Does travertine need to be sealed before grouting? ” No; only very absorbent stones could benefit from that, and travertine is certainly not among them. Can you explain why please ? Have a good one Clint

Dear Clint:

Could I explain why what?... Why travertine is not very absorbent?

I don't know why, but I'm sure that you ask your question to a Higher Authority you will probably have an answer to that. J

An impregnator sealer is a lousy grout-release product and since travertine does not need to prevent the staining agent in the grout to go deep inside it as it were, say, sandstone, there's no reason to pre-seal it. To make the cleaning of the grout off the stone surface easier what you have to do is use a grout release product, not an impregnating sealer.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected.
