Let's put it this ways: while it should have been intuitive that the “vinegar treatment” didn't stand a chance to do the first thing, consider yourself darn lucky that it did not do even more damage!
I have no idea exactly as to what could have happened, but I do know that damages like that are usually permanent and irreversible. However, if the wetness of the vinegar hid the damages from sight (until it was wet), you should be able to get the same result in a permanent way by using a good-quality stone color-enhancer like MB-6.
