cleaning slate hearth

Had a beautiful VT slate hearth laid in 1989 for a newly built fireplace -- found slate mantel at salvage yard, covered with paint -- beautiful green slate when we bubbled off the 5 or mor layers of paint. Now the hearth is quite stained and scratched. What's the best way to clean it? I don't know if it was sealed or not. Local mason -- great Rumny fireplace which throws out a pile of heat -- but he's dead and gone, and I have noone to ask.

Dear Lois:

It is not by asking to someone that you will ever the able to solve your problem. Only a bone fide stone restoration contractor could be able to help by slightly re-grinding (honing) the surface of your stone.

And even if you had sealed it you would have the same problem.

May I ask you now to please read and e-sign our Statement of Purpose at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
