pool waterline tile

Hi Maurizio, I am getting ready to put in new waterline tile in my pool. I have been shopping around and have found that there is actual pool tile to be used for this because of the chemicals in the water. I have come across some beautiful marble tile that was left over from someone's project. Could marble tile be used for a waterline or would it be too porous and frail for this purpose?

Dear Scott:

I seem to remember that the Romans used to use lots of marble in their public baths…

Granted, they didn't have any chlorine or other typical pool chemicals back then, but if it's the right marble, if it's thick enough, if it's not polished and is installed properly, you shouldn't have any major problem.
And, BTW, marble is not really porous.

Ciao and good luck,

Mauri z io Bertoli
