Cleaning and re-sealing Tumbled Marble

I have tumbled marble tiles on the bathroom floor and on the walls inside the shower. I believe the tiles were not sealed enough from the installation. The floor and grout is dirty. I have tried several marble cleaning products with just a slight bit of the dirt coming up. The shower grout (and possibly the tile) is starting to yellow a bit. I am also now seeing some mildew. I would like to know what should be done for a good cleaning and then to re-seal the floors and walls. Thank you!

Dear Michele:

And may I ask why are you so obsessed about sealing your stone? Especially in a wet environment (shower stall)? What did it ever do to you to deserve that?

The shower grout (and possibly the tile) is starting to yellow a bit.

That could very well be the consequence of the sealing.

I am also now seeing some mildew.

Of course they told you to religiously “seal” your stone or else (did they tell you that if you sacrificed a goat or something to the gods of the “sealing cult” before starting the ritual of the sealing the sealer would work better?!... J ) but then they “forgot” to tell you how to take care of your investment… Amazing, ain't it?! It sure don't make sense to me, but what do I know?...

The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
