sealer for limestone shower stall

How many square feet does one gallon of sealer cover? I am sealing a rainforest green antique finish shower. And one other shower.

Dear Tammy:

There's no credible answer to your question. If you have to seal a very absorbent sandstone, 1 GL of impregnator will cover no more than 200 sq.ft. at best, each application (you may need 3 or more, depending on the brand of impregnator).

If instead you want to seal a stone that's too dense to be sealed (i.e.: many a mercantile granite, polished marble, etc.) then the coverage is… infinite! J

That said, if it were my own shower stall I would never apply any impregnator to your stone. Natural stone should never be sealed when installed in a wet environment. At best, if you like the way the color deepens when your stone is wet, you may consider applying a good-quality stone color-enhancer like MB-6.

Also keep in mind that the best “sealer” in the entire wild, wild world for a shower stall is the installer. I seldom witnessed shower stall failures due to the wrong stone (only twice). The overwhelming majority of shower stall failures – and I had to deal with a large dose of those during my contracting days – stemmed by improper installation.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
