We have a brand new marble counter in our bathroom and seemed to have ruined it with its first cleaning. We had no idea that regular bathroom cleaner would 'stain' the surface. Is there anything that will remove these 'spots'. They look like bleached spots or water spots where the cleaner was sprayed.

This reminds me of one of my cases history, where a lady asked her dealer what to use to clean the marble floor and walls in her master bathroom, and the guy allegedly told her, “Well, it's a bathroom… use a bathroom cleaner!”

So, perhaps, if those marble tiles were installed in a living room instead, she should have used a living room cleaner or something!... J

I mean, what gave you the idea of using a toilet bowl cleaner to clean a vanity top – no matter what it's made of?

Well, too late now, I'm afraid.

What to do?

Under more normal circumstances I would suggest you to try a good quality Marble Repair kit, but typically toilet-bowl cleaners (aka bathroom cleaners)are highly acidic and the kind of etching they produce is usually too severe to be handled by a Marble Repair Kit. Not to mention the extensiveness of the damage. You may try before throwing the towel in, but, most likely, you will need the services of a reputable stone restoration contractor that will have to slightly re-grind (hone) the surface of your stone, and then re-polish it to factory specs. And for course, from then on you will have to learn how to take proper care of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
