Dull finished Emerald Pearl edges

The fabricator insists that he cannot finish grind/polish the bullnose that he fabricated to achieve the same level of gloss of the factory-finished piece. He insists that he used a 3000 grit finish compound. Isn't there anything that can be done to matched the pieces? Granite is less than 2 months old. Thanks.

Dear Kelvin:

Isn't there anything that can be done to matched the pieces?

Of course there is. It's called “fabricator who knows what is doing” and unfortunately, there are a few out there that don't meet that requirement… L

He insists that he used a 3000 grit finish compound.

I'm sure he did. But 3000 is only a number. That doesn't mean that he's using the right type of abrasives for that particular stone.

Emerald Pearl, which is a rare form of Alkaline Feldspar Syenite, can be tricky to polish at times, depending on the batches. But that doesn't mean that it can be polished. If the factory polished the face of the slab, that means that a good fabricator with more than one trick up his sleeves can polish the edges, too. After all, polishing edges is much easier than polishing the face of a stone – especially mercantile granite.

Other than that, there's not much else I can suggest you, alas.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
