Hi, I read about your products on the internet and they seem to be the best available. I have three questions: a. We are limestone for the floor tiles (see http://www.roman-stone.co.uk/products.aspx?SubID=18&ID=1). What sealer would you recommend for this type of stone? b. Can I apply the sealer myself? What type of training is necessary? c. How much selear would I need for ~1600 sq feet? Many thanks, John

 

Dear John:

 

1.     One application only of a good-quality stone impregnator like MB-4 will do. That particular limestone is on the dense side and will not stain easily to begin with. Sealing it is but an extra-precaution.

2.     I don't have an answer to that. It all depends on how handy you are and how familiar you are at handling a professional floor machine. Because, to treat 1600 sq.ft. you will need a professional 17” swing floor machine, with a supply of white nylon pads to fit. (A machine like that can be rented at any Janitorial Supply Company.)

3.     Considering the natural density of that particular limestone, since – like I said before – one application will be plenty, I would say approximately 1 Gl plus 3 QT at a rate of 250 sq.ft/QT. But if you will limit the sealing only where it makes sense, then with 1 GL you should be more than enough.

 

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic!
