We are in the process of building a pool in our yard and I would like to use travertine 6X6 tiles in the pool at the water line. I have gone to 2 different tile stores and both have told me that the pool water would destroy the travertine over time - I don't want that to happen! One store suggested I purchase a tile that says it is 90% stone and 10% resin (not sure how they do that) because it can with stand being in the water all the time. Please let me know the real story. Also our pool is going to be a salt water pool not traditional chemicals. OH and by the way I know not to seal the stone outside (after reading many of your Q&A's) THANKS!

I really don't know the real story. In fact, I never even heard of such 90/10 thing. What I do know is that travertine is an extremely tough stone and can take some serious beating, without getting “destroyed”. Look at the Coliseum in Rome. Granted, it's not being exposed to salty water, but I believe it's safe to say that over 2000 years of exposure to the weather would have done more damage than some salty water, don't you think? Unless, of course, the Romans used travertine that was 90% stone and 10% resin… J
