I have chosen Calacatta marble for a new bath in my home. Some salespeople call it Calcutta, even though the slab has a label with Calacatta on it. I've also seen the name Calcutta in shelter magazines. Are these two different stones or is Calcutta a mispronunciation?

More important than anything else, and that, alas, seldom represents a priority with all too many homeowners, is the way the stone tiles will be installed. Even the best stone will become a sad heap of junk in the hands of some “Michelangelo”.

That duly said, and going now into the semantic of the name of the marble, Calacatta marble comes from the region of Carrara, Italy. To the best of my knowledge, the Italians had no reason to name their marble after an Indian city… J

Yeah, I know that many call it Calcutta. But it is the same stone and there's no such a thing like Calcutta marble.

Chalk it up to the aversion toward other languages of the average English speaking person. J

 

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone.
