marble table in kitchen, Good idea?

I have found a beautiful marble dining table that I would like to purchase. I am planning on putting it in my kitchen, so it will be used often. I have two small children that are rough on things. What is your opinion about purchasing a table like this with a family with small children? Would it hold up throughout the years? The table top is made with polished inlay marble. I heard that marble can stain easily. Thank you for your advice.

Dear Cindy:

You heard it wrong. Marble doesn't stain easy at all. What it does it etches easily, because it is sensitive to acidic substances and anything that you will spill on it will corrode its surface on contact. Nothing to do with staining, but still a royal pain in the neck.

However, there's a solution that many of my former customers (when I was still a stone restoration contractor) adopted and have been very happy with: they had a sheet of glass custom-made and put on top of the table top. That's the only “sealer” that would work. J

Ciao and good luck,
