How to Repair Etched Marble Vanity

Q. I've had a polished marble countertop in my bathroom for 6 years (it was new when I moved in). I don't know what kind of marble it is. I caused a large etch mark (looks dull, not shiny) after spilling wine on the surface several years ago. Lately, I've noticed more and more etch spots are appearing, and I don't know where they're coming from (maybe my housekeeper's cleaners?) or how to eliminate them. How can I find out whether MB-11 or some other solution is right for my stone?

A. First, I would recommend that you make sure your housekeeper is not using any kind of cleaner on your marble countertop unless it states specifically that it is safe for natural stone. Bathroom cleaners are notorious for causing damage because so many of them have acid in them.

To repair the damage, yes MB-11 or any good marble polishing compound would be great unless there are too many spots or if they are severe (you can feel the roughness). If the areas are small, just follow the directions on the label.

If it is severe or too many spots, I would recommend you contact a stone restoration contractor to repolish the surface for you. I don't know what area you are in, but you can locate a stone pro here: www.stoneandtilepros.com/findapro.php
