Stain on wet granite

Q. Hi, I had a black granite countertop (Nero Absoluto) installed about six months ago that was sealed with a product from SCI called Stone Spray'n'Seal. I also purchased a lint-free cloth to give the counter a damp wipe when required. A few days ago, I noticed an area of the counter that shows a dark ring (stain?) like from the bottom of a glass when the counter is wet. When I dry the counter with another cloth the ring disappears. Any idea what is going on there?

A. It sounds like your stone needs to be resealed. If you pour water on it and leave it for a few minutes then wipe it away and a dark spot remains, the stone is absorbing the moisture, which of course means it is vulnerable to staining. I would recommend MB Stone Care MB4 Sealer for Stone which you can get from www.mbstonecare.com/. Follow the instructions on the back label and you should be good.

Download the stone care guide which will also give you some good information on sealing, including how to test if your stone is adequately sealed.
