Travertine Shower floor with black spots in the tiles

Q. I am a Realtor and have a client with a Travertine shower floor that has black spots throughout the floor. It almost looks like mildew, but is "in" the tiles. I am sure she has cleaned it with the wrong stuff, but what can we do to fix this problem and what is the cause of it? Thanks so much.

A. It does sound like mildew. Try soaking a rag with a mild bleach solution and letting it sit on the tiles for some time. See if the black spots go away. If it doesn't do the trick please get back with us.

But, to address the wrong products issue, you are so right. It is very important to use only products designated safe for natural stone.
