Q. Hello, I have a fireplace where I have laid black limestone 2" thick. The cut edge can be seen and is lighter than the finished top. I've used wax and oils on sample pieces but they all seem to go back to a lighter colour. Any ideas on how to match the shades? Regards, Colin.

 

A. The cut edges are going to be lighter due to the fact that they are not honed and polished. You have several options to darken the edges:

1.  The best option would be to have the edges sanded and polished. This is best done by a pro. (You can find one in your area at www.stoneandtilepros.com/findapro.php)

 
2. Another option would be to apply a color enhancer. It may take several applications. You may also want to sand the edge a little and than apply some color enhancer. (I would start with a 60 grit wet dry sandpaper and work up to a 800 grit paper.)
 
3. You can also try applying a stain to the edges. Simply use a wood stain that you can purchase at most home centers.
