Hello, (1) We are building a new custom home and I am considering installing slate (multi-color, 3/8 inch) on the kitchen floor. I plan on having a color enhancer (with matter finish) put on the slate tiles. The tile salesperson tried to steer me off this choice, instead encouraging me to go for look-alike porcelain tiles. I love the look of slate, but I also want to make a wise decision. I don't want to give up slate unless there is a good reason(s) to do so. I have a good installer through my builder. (2) I was originally planning on installing travertine tiles in my bath which will have a steam shower. The tile salesperson mentioned that travertine tiles are a poor choice for baths with steam showers and instead recommended limestone. Any help/suggestion you can offer asap on my above two questions would be highly appreciated. Thank you Mita

 

A. Hi, It doesn't sound like your salesperson really knows what they are talking about. First, slate is a good choice and will hold up for years in comparison to any man-made material. Second, travertine is a limestone and would be suitable for a steam shower. However with all this said, it is important that you select an installer who is familar with both of these materials. Most of the problems associated with stone and tile is not the stone or tile but improper installation. Of course the proper care is also important after it is installed.
