Q.We have honed Durango travertine as coping around our pool. When first installed it had a rich color which began overtime to fade (oxidized?) due to weathering (more white than pale yellow/gold color). I tried a sealer color product which did bring back the color but a year later that has worn off and again it's faded. I am wondering if brief HCl acid wash would help as well as roughen it a bit (its slippery when wet)? Tests on a scrap seem to work very well for both color and roughness. Any draw back to this approach (it may eventually fade after weathering too)? Thanks

I would stay away from the acid wash as travertine is acid sensitive.I would however consider having the stone honed

mechanically with either brushes.diamond pads or honing powders to roughen it up a bit and then use an exterior color enhancer that can be reapplied each season or once a year.If you need a pro go to www.stoneandtilepros.com
