restoring 100 year old slate fireplaces

Q. Hello, cool site. I am trying to restore numerous fireplaces from 1900. They have been painted about 3 times. I have removed the paint on one with citristrip. But i am not sure if i should sand them and then use the stone enhancer. or just wash them. and if i should sand how do i do that? thank you

A. Hi. Glad you like our site. Restoration of 100 year old fireplaces can be complex. After stripping, you will need to determine what needs to be done. Do you want to restore the original finish, honed or polished?

There are many things that will need to be considered to determine how to restore them. I would recommend that you consult with a pro in your area. To locate one near you, visit the Find a PRO section at www.stoneandtilepros.com.
