Slate Shower Question

We have natural slate in our shower and I have a couple of questions. 1) what should I use to clean it with and 2) is it harsh on skin?? The bottoms of my feet are really rough and dry and I only started having this problem when we moved into the house and using the shower... my husband is having the same issue. Any ideas??
