Marble tile in shower

I had originally bought marble tiles to use in my foyer. I was discouraged by a friend from doing it becuase of kids running and possibly slipping. I decided to use them to redo my bathroom instead. Now I'm being told that the marble can eventually become a maintenance and cleaning problem. Is this true... is marble not suitable for showers? Thanks.

Dear Jon:

First off, your friend's advice was totally off base. Unless wet, polished stone is not slippery at all. And when wet, most floors this side of carpet are slippery anyway.

Second, the maintenance problems that marble tiles can present in a shower enclosure are only the consequence of the amazing ignorance about stone of the people you've been talking with.

If installed properly (which is paramount), and if you get the right intelligence on how to care for your stone (which is certainly not rocket science), there's absolutely nothing wrong with polished marble in a shower stall.

A great resource for locating a quality installer is www.stoneandtilepros.com. This is one thing you don't want to shop 'price' only on. Select the Find a Pro tab to locate someone in your area.

For stone care and maintenance you can also download the Stone and Tile Care Guide which I contributed to substantially.

May I ask you now to please read our Statement of Purpose that you can find at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/purpose.htm?

Ciao and good luck,
