Travertine

Maurizio, I recently had honed travertine installed and sealed with Impregnator 511, a polymerized silicon. The tile finish is very dissimilar, splotchy and some look dirty, even though I've washed and cleaned them several times. Is there a finish I can put on it, that will even out the appearance. I'd like it to be a satin or even glossy, if need be. I've tried several waxes and none give an even appearance. I suppose it's the silicone that prevents them from adhering to some sections. Any suggestions?

Dear Jim :

Like I often say, factory hone-finish is not fit for sale. The machinery they use (the only one available and that are called Automatic Polishing Lines) were not engineered to produce a hone-finish – as simple as that.

No topical finish of any nature will ever accomplish what you're after; not to mention the big maintenance issues attached to anything sitting on top of the stone.

There's a solution, of course, but your only option is to hire a proficient stone restoration contractor that will re-hone your entire floor with a good-quality honing powder (anything else will not give you a picture perfect result). Only then will you have a very uniform finish throughout your entire floor!

Ciao and good luck,
