travertine for bathroom

We are considering travertine for both bath flooring and walls in a steam shower. We are a busy family with lots of kids. The bathroom would have high traffic and we really prefer low maintenance materials. We really like the look and feel of travertine, but also find the low maintenance features of poreclin attractive. 1) Can we use travertine in a steam shower? 2) What will happen to travertine if we don't spend much time on maintenance? Thanks!

Dear Dahyen:

And how good is the installer?...

Hone-finished travertine is a terrific choice and low-maintenance for the project you have in mind (its polished counterpart would be too much of a maintenance ticket), but the stone itself is as good as the installer that sets it in place. But then again, that is valid even for porcelain tiles, even if not to such a dramatic extent.

Now remember, it's never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you'll be doing day in and day out to your stone is far more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it's all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site's postings, you're not likely to get good information about it from your dealer or installer. Don't become another statistic! By logging into the Helpful Hints section of our website at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/helpful-hints.htm , you will be able to get the short version of our maintenance guidelines at no charge. The full version of it – a 7-page document considered by many as an industry benchmark – is available in pay-per-download format in our Educational Literature section at: http://www.marblecleaning.org/literature.htm . In there you will also find useful tips to make sure that your stall is installed right!

And remember, every single penny of the cost of the literature will be used to support this site and its cause: your cause.
